Capsule coffee machines: how to choose, and models checked for your country
A capsule machine is the easiest way to a consistent cup: water in, capsule in, one button. The big decision is not the machine but the capsule system, because each machine only takes its own capsules.
The capsule systems are not interchangeable
- Nespresso Original: small espresso and lungo capsules. Many other brands also sell capsules that fit, which gives more choice.
- Nespresso Vertuo: the machine reads a barcode on the rim of each capsule and adjusts the brew, from espresso up to a large mug. Vertuo capsules come mainly from Nespresso itself.
- NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto: a wide range of drinks, including milk drinks and hot chocolate made from capsules.
- TASSIMO: the machine reads a barcode on each disc ("T DISC") and sets the drink. Also coffee, tea and milk drinks.
- Keurig: K-Cup pods for a regular mug of filter-style coffee, sold mainly in the United States and Canada.
Before you choose, check which capsules are easy to buy where you live. A machine is only as useful as the capsules you can get.
Who a capsule machine suits
Great for people who want coffee in under a minute, small kitchens, offices, and homes where everyone wants a different drink. There is no grinding, no weighing and very little mess.
Less suited to people who drink many cups a day (capsules cost more per cup than beans), to those who want to fine-tune the taste, or to anyone who wants to avoid single-use packaging. Some brands run capsule recycling schemes; check what exists in your area.
How to choose: five quick checks
- System: espresso-style (Nespresso Original), espresso to large mug (Vertuo), many drink types (Dolce Gusto, TASSIMO) or a regular mug (Keurig).
- Cup size: if you mostly drink a large mug, make sure the machine brews it in one go.
- Milk: most small machines do not froth milk. Add a separate milk frother if you want lattes.
- Space: compare width and depth below with the spot on your counter, and the tank size with how often you want to refill it.
- Voltage: buy the version made for your country's mains supply.

Looking after a capsule machine
Empty the used capsule container and drip tray often, rinse the water tank, and descale as the maker's manual tells you, more often if your water is hard. Use only capsules made for your system: a capsule that does not fit can jam the machine.
